The Master of Arts in Teaching, Middle Grades and Secondary program (grades 6-12) is an 11-month program for students who have completed a baccalaureate degree and who are seeking a teaching certificate in secondary and middle grades education. Applicants to this program should preferably have an undergraduate degree in a subject normally taught in Alaska secondary schools (e.g. English, social studies, mathematics, sciences, art, music) or be willing to take courses in that subject area to strengthen their content background. Contact Scott Christian for more information. Placements for this program are made throughout Alaska. A total of 36 graduate credits are required. First round application deadline is April 1st. Late applications will be considered.

The six-week summer program is offered on the Juneau campus and prepares the intern to begin the teaching internship when the public schools begin. Fall and Spring courses are offered via e-Learning only.

  3. Cumulative GPA: 3.0 minimum
  4. Transcripts from all universities attended. 
  5. Two recommendation forms addressing Academic Content and Professional Dispositions
  6. Student Information Sheet
  7. Information Release Waiver Statement
  8. Current Resume
  9. Statement of Professional Objectives
  10. Passing Praxis CORE Test
  11. Student Teaching Authorization
  12. Scheduled interview with faculty, either face to face or through web conference.  The admissions interview will be conducted by UAS supervision faculty in alignment with subject area disciplines.)  
  13. Passing Praxis II Subject Assessment prior to admission. 
  14. Students must complete a transcript evaluation form to be reviewed by faculty prior to admission.  (If there are content deficiencies, the student will be advised to defer enrollment. )
