Healthcare Privacy and Security Certificate
This e-Learning Healthcare Privacy and Security Certificate prepares students for employment in data access, disclosure and healthcare informatics. Students who complete this program are prepared to work in a variety of employment settings, particularly in healthcare related facilities. This certificate contains coursework that will apply toward the Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Management (HIM). Minimum grade of C (2.00) is required in all courses. A grade of C- is not considered passing.
High school diploma or GED, and must complete English placement exam as part of the admissions process.

This certificate was created in response to the increased complexity of data disclosure, particularly the full implementation of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This Privacy and Security Certificate prepares students for employment in data access and disclosure.
1. Students who complete this certificate are prepared to work in a variety of employment settings, particularly healthcare related facilities.
2. Currently, most HIM professionals must meet a minimum standard of 20 continuing education (CE) credits in a two year cycle, and half of these must be in 6 core areas, one of which is external environment, including regulatory issues.
3. The Healthcare Privacy and Security course HIM 289 also provides accredited professionals with CE opportunity.
